Glossary of Important Terms

BTS ARMY's Important Glossary of stan terminology

As our community grows, so does our unique jargon. For newcomers, this can be confusing, so I've compiled a short list of frequently used terms you'll encounter here.

Most are self-explanatory, but it’s always helpful to clarify their meanings.

ARMY's frequently used terms in stan/fandom culture - The not so fun ones

SOLO STAN - A fan who exclusively likes one member of a group. Solos often display disrespect towards other members of the group.

DIET SOLO - A Diet Solo is closely aligned with a Solo Stan. The main distinction lies in their lack of self-awareness; they often fail to recognize their solo tendencies. Typically, they only support causes related to their bias and fail to acknowledge any issues associated with endorsing solo stan agendas, even if it negatively impacts the group their bias is a part of. Many are completely unaware and remain in denial.

AKGAE (악개) - This term refers to a fan who exclusively likes one member of a group and harbours dislike or hatred towards the others. It is an abbreviation of "akseong gaeinpaen" (악성개인팬) or "malicious individual fan." Akgae fans often spread negative rumours and misinformation about other group members. Many of us use akgae, antis, and solo as interchangeable terms, as all three descriptors consistently seem to capture the behaviour of individuals who conduct themselves in this manner within fandom spaces.

ANTI's - An "anti," "anti-fan," or "antis" is someone who harbours hatred towards a specific member or group. Some antis go out of their way to discredit the member/group they dislike by creating fake rumours or searching for "evidence." More often than not, this evidence is either fabricated or taken out of its original context and twisted maliciously, with the aim of diminishing a member’s talent or achievements.

MANTI (WANNABE MANAGER-ANTI) - Coined by BTS ARMY, is an abbreviation for “Manager Antis.” These are fans who profess to support BTS but consistently attempt to micromanage every aspect of BTS's actions, relentlessly criticizing the promotional strategies of the company as if they were the artists' managers. They pretend to have precise knowledge of all discussions that have occurred behind the scenes. These individuals vociferously complain about perceived shortcomings in promotion, lines, and screen time, presuming they know better than both the artists and the professionals working with them.

KPOPPIES - Coined by BTS ARMY, it refers to annoying overbearing kpop stans, normally ones who aren’t ARMYs themselves or who are toxic-multis or straight-up ANTI’s.

MULTIS – Not to be confused with TOXIC-MULTIS, are simply individuals who enjoy a wide variety of artists and music genres. In the context of ARMY Twitter, most people are music lovers first and, by extension, multis. HOWEVER, it's widely understood that ARMY stan Twitter serves as a designated safe space for ARMYs to express love and support for BTS exclusively. Many individuals maintain more than one account to effectively separate their fandoms.

TOXIC-MULTIS – refer to “Kpoppies”.

SASAENG - Fans who have crossed the line and become stalkers. These individuals invade the privacy of a member/idol/artist, causing discomfort or a sense of unsafety. An example of a sasaeng is a "fan" or fansite that intentionally purchases plane tickets to share the same flight as the artist. Another instance is when sasaengs show up at airports without any publicly disclosed schedule; thus, the only way to anticipate a member/idol/artist's presence at a specific location and time is typically by being part of a network of other stalkers or their supporters.

FANSITE - A photographer typically devoted to a specific member/idol/artist, capturing HD photographs and/or videos of them without their consent, using professional equipment. This practice is prohibited at nearly all venues worldwide. Fansites operate without permits from venues or event promoters and are often escorted out when discovered in the crowd. They document moments from various events such as award shows, concerts, fan meetings, airports, work schedules, and private schedules.

Many fansites cross the line into SASAENG/stalker territory by appearing at undisclosed locations where the artist will be, information often obtained through other SASAENG fans. ALL fansites generate income by selling their photos and videos without the artist’s approval or consent to use their Intellectual Property (IP). Some fansites may not even be genuine fans of the member/idol/artist; instead, they focus on the lucrative market of selling to "fans" who may not be concerned about the ethical sourcing of the content. These fans often view idols and artists as commodities to be consumed, rather than recognizing them as human beings with a right to privacy and personal space.

SHIPPING/SHIPPER – The term originates from "relation-SHIP." Fans often innocently begin by "shipping" the friendships and dynamics among members within groups. The issue arises when a fan or a faction of a fandom desires members/idols/artists to be romantically involved, showing a total disregard for the genuine feelings of the human beings they "ship." This form of shipping becomes problematic when fans become excessively obsessed, asserting that their preferred "ship" is authentic and engaging in conflicts with what they perceive as rival "ships." These fans tend to overlook the fact that the individuals they are "shipping" are human beings with very real emotions.

SHOOTER - A "shooter" account is one that "defends their faves at all costs," as they like to say. These accounts get involved in fan wars frequently. Though the idea might sound appealing to some, shooters often end up causing more problems for the fandom than they solve. Engaging with other toxic fans only breeds more toxicity, which can damage the reputation of both the fandom and the artist. This negative image is often highlighted and exaggerated by those looking to criticize a particular fandom. Many of these “shooter” accounts are run by toxic multis and antis who aim to perpetuate the “bad/toxic” image of a rival fandom.
